Muchas Mas Matcha

I’ve developed a very important skill. Well, it’s important to me anyhow, and apparently a few others. I’ve learned to make a matcha latte with a flavor sweet enough to cheer almost any morning.

Others seem to agree. I love offering guests a matcha latte when they arrive, expected or unannounced. They appear to love drinking them and telling me so.

It may seem like a small thing. But you see, to me it is an act of beauty. That’s because no one needs a matcha latte. Even many of those who end up liking one, they didn’t know they wanted one, until after they tried it.

A matcha latte has no reason to exist other than to please. And the more frothy the almond-coconut milk blend; the more hand-aerated the matcha tea; the more perfect the temperature upon that first glorious sip; the more this morning delight goes from a beverage to a work of art.

Introducing beauty into my life on any basis expands me in some way. It can help me see the beauty in other things around me, even the most mundane. It can deliver the message that life is about more than “doing” or “having,” it’s also about just “being.” I find when I’m grateful for just “being,” my whole life feels a bit more worthwhile.

So having a matcha latte in the morning is clearly more to me than a cup of tea. It’s a moment to set all the other things aside and savor a sweet moment of beauty. It’s a moment to be grateful I have another day to appreciate.

My wife often shares these latte moments with me. When we do, we set aside everything else. We sit outside, watching the hummingbirds and sip. I don’t just give the latte to her, I present it with a poetic message…just to add an extra dose of special. It brings us closer together.

I hope my matcha story blends with some spark of special inside of you and leaves you with a sweet aftertaste of gratitude to flavor your day. Whether with a matcha or any other form of beauty.
